Being an avid armchair watcher of tech advances and disruption - I'm wondering how this one is going to play out. Amazon is now selling cars online and working directly with the car manufacturers. Similar to other brick and mortar retailer woes, does this mean that dealerships will just become showrooms as people try the cars and then leave to buy online? If successful, this could certainly demand a new business model for the auto industry. Facebook Marketplace (and Groups) got an unusual amount of airtime during Meta's Q2 2024 earnings call. What it means: Meta is trying to change the narrative that young people aren’t using Facebook. ✨ In May, #Meta announced that 40 million 18-to-29-year-olds in the US and Canada use Facebook daily. Why it matters: It’s true that young people are on Facebook more than many people think, but they use it for a specific purpose, such as buying secondhand goods on Marketplace, rather than scrolling the feed. ✨ 51.9% of US 18- to 24-year-olds will use Facebook at least once per month, per EMARKETER estimates, but they will only spend an average of 11 minutes on the app per day. ✨ 75% of US 15-to-26-year-old #Facebook shoppers had made a purchase on Facebook Marketplace in the previous 12 months, as have 81.3% of 27-to-42-year-old shoppers. Yes, but: Marketplace is an undermonetized area of Facebook. Meta's challenge will be directing those shoppers to other areas of the app, mainly the Feed. ✨ The main feed will account for 82.2% of Facebook’s worldwide ad revenues in 2024, per EMARKETER. Google continues to lose market share in the U.S to AI powerhouses like Open AI and Perplexity and the good ole Bing search engine. Google's ad market share could drop below 50% for the first time in a decade. If this is true, time to go short on Google. $GOOG

We just supported our 4th Sprouts Innovation Set. Here’s what we’ve learned so far: You can definitely game the game here. Retail media is a great way to earn a permanent spot on the Sprouts shelf. There are a couple of options that work nicely. (Both are through Instacart.) Here are the most important tips: 1. Don’t wait to see how it goes, go HAM from day 1. -> Some of the smaller stores will pull you after only 3 weeks. -> The clock is ticking faster than you think. 2. Set up products on IX-One ASAP. -> You won’t show up on Instacart or Sprouts.com without them. -> Whether using retail media or not, you will need these channels. 3. Press hard on competitor search terms. -> If you’re in the innovation set, you’re probably already outside of the box. -> Target brands with similar customer demographics. 4. Leverage electronic coupons and BOGO’s. -> Figure out how many units you need to drive first. -> Leverage coupons and BOGO’s if you need to hit your goals. 5. Make sure you ask Instacart for free spend early. -> You need all the extra horsepower you can muster. -> $300 is a gimme. Do t leave it in the table. Sprouts is a powerful channel. This system works to keep it. We spent $75,000 on a logo that we accidentally (maybe?) stole from Leonardo DiCaprio. In 2022, we spent months working with one of the top design agencies in NYC. We went well above our budget because we loved the agency, and believed they could craft the perfect logo for our company rebrand. The whole team was pumped. We had everything ready to go. - New website - Business cards - Branded swag - Launch emails drafted ... All of this scheduled for a regular Monday morning Then, on Sunday night, I got a call from a co-worker who saw that Leo had just launched a new Climate Tech VC fund.... WITH OUR EXACT LOGO I am talking about the same exact logo. Not similar. Not inspired by... IDENTICAL. Every curve, color, and detail was a replica of our $75k design. This was statistically impossible to happen. Two teams, independently creating the exact same unique logo, and planning to launch one day apart? We investigated how this was possible and we never found a connection or any way this could have happened. The agency was stunned. We even called Leo's fund and they couldn't find a connection or how this was possible. I don't actually think Leo or his team stole our logo. I also don't think our agency stole it from him. The timing makes it virtually impossible. But try explaining that to our design team who spent months on this. 🤯 We had to scramble to create a new logo at the last minute. It was pure chaos. There is a silver lining though - the new logo ended up being even better. 👉 I guess sometimes the craziest setbacks lead to better outcomes. This is just one of the crazy stories we had to overcome at Broadlume.

Sounds like the first step in a potential break up Google's ad business (in addition to the Search / Chrome case) is incoming by end of year. Jason Kint talked about how Google's monopoly led to the death of the publisher side ad servers. If there is a break up, perhaps there will be room for publishers to take back some of that control. I cannot express how cool this is for Streaming TV ads. With this partnership, new sought after AMC audience strategies arise for brands, including my favourite: competitor conquesting audiences! Brands can now create audiences based off of retailer purchaser data, powered by Stackline Shopper OS, which provides many new AMC audience use cases. Not only that, but brands can now measure if their STV efforts are creating conversions on Amazon, their website AND in retailers with Gigi! In addition to the questions raised in this article, I’d consider the second-order effects of increasing automated, tailored outreach by 10X — with (relatively) low-cost, commercial solutions that any company can adopt. There’s not 10X more buyer attention or 10X more buyer budget out there. This may be new table stakes in efficient sales operations, but the outcomes seem like they must inevitably revert to the mean.

What happens when you combine AI, moving trucks, and hyperlocal advertising? Tombras partnered with PODS to transform its trucks into "Impossibly Smart Billboards" across New York City. ✅ 6,000 hyperlocal ads were created, each tailored to New York neighborhoods, using location, weather, time, and traffic data. ✅ PODS trucks became real-time digital billboards, displaying AI-generated headlines wherever they went. ✅ A custom AI suite, powered by Google Cloud, analyzed over 10,000 customer reviews, podcasts, and brand insights, transforming them into hyper-personalized messaging. The campaign covered all 299 NYC neighborhoods with hyper-personalized messaging. Results? A stunning 51% YoY lift in search volume and the biggest weekly percentage increase for 2024 in NYC What started as an "impossible" mission turned into a masterclass in combining AI with creative advertising. Instacart not having negative keywords as an option is the best example of what "machine learning" actually costs brands to support. The best solution I've found? Take their auto applied keywords and make their bid the lowest possible (30 cents). I built a really solid ads structure supporting each of our Target sku's and woke up to us bidding on "Ben and Jerry's" as a "optimized auto applied suggesition" for our Vanilla Ice Cream Whey. Gee, I wonder what sophisticated dev team decided "auto bid on product title". Yeah, in the world of CPG there could neeevvverrr be issues with that. Who leads this team and how much do you make. (Hint: too much). Happy Friday to everyone except overpaid leadership that don't actually understand what they're building and get paid boat loads of money for it.
